| The map to the left shows the division of states between the North, the South and Border States at the outset of the war. Minnesota was a territory in 1849 and achieved statehood in 1858... a few years before the start of the Civil War conflict. Much of the western United States was still in a territory status with Texas and Kansas the only states further west. |

| At the start of the Civil War, there were an estimated 8,800 men and boys in Hennepin County. During the course of the war on the order of 1,700 volunteered! That's 20% of all the men and boys in the County. Minnesota was one of the first states to offer troops to serve!! The First Minnesota was the first regiment and more were formed over the ensuing years, creating the Second, Third, Fourth, Fifth, Sixth, Seventh, Eighth, Ninth, Tenth & Eleventh Regiments and more. |
