Our Immigrant Ancestors, a story of Ellis Island, the Statue of Liberty and The New Land!
Emmigrants from many lands boarded ships to leave for America, many coming to the New York harbor and seeing the Statue of Liberty.  Many also entered through Ellis Island with the bulk of our new immigrants coming from 1850's through the 1920's.  The Cunard Line ship above has 2 stacks for their engines but also has masts to use sails for the trip.

It's now easier than ever to view census records at sites like Ancestry.com.  Here's a page from 1910.  My grandfather is listed as a boarder in the home of the Quarry foreman.  There are 5-6 boarders all from Sweden, all working at the same local stone quarry.  The foremans' family included a 16-year old daughter.  By 1920, the census record shows my grandfather had married that daughter and they have children of their own.  It's an example of an amazing view of the lives of our ancestry families of so long ago!

If your ancestor came to America on a ship, they likely boarded a train to get farther west into Minnesota and other midwestern states.  This is the famous William Crooks locomotive of the Great Northern Railway.  It was James J. Hill and associates that had control of both the Great Northern, the Northern Pacific and the Burlington Route.  Those railroads all became part of  the Burlington Northern Santa Fe! (BNSF)
